The Weight She Carries

Especially for the children
on the New York City ferry
who, looking out the window,
suddenly shout

"Look! Look! It's the Statue of Liberty!"

Followed by smiles and jumping up and down!

I realize that Lady Liberty has shown up in
my writing a few times so far this year.

I'm cognizant of the weight she carries.

She is a symbol for what some of us,
actually most of us,
are holding on to these days.

The enthusiasm of young children
on recognizing Lady Liberty
is enough to make you smile,
maybe even warm your heart.

It's hard to feel a little more hopeful
for our future if you cannot let your heart be warmed
and a smile cross your face

So how about finding something that stirs
hopefulness in you
in the midst of the maelstrom surrounding us

Maybe share it with someone
who's feeling the overwhelm.

We are not each of us carrying the weight.
We are in this together.

    Dear Carol,
Beautiful peaceful strong words and perspective. It’s important for people to be reminded that feeling overwhelmed is okay, that it is collective, especially in these days, and that there is always a way to find hope in one’s day to day life, no matter how small, and to believe there will be an end to what is happening. I’m going to print this off and put on my outside daily board for people to see. Thank you once again for your remarkable words.
    Love,
    Phyllis
